1. The Virtual Microscope Explorer runs on Shockwave Media Player. Make sure that you have Shockwave Media Player on your computer. On the start page for Virtual Microscope Explorer, there is a link that allows you to download at no cost the most recent version of Shockwave.
For convenience, if the computer you are working on does not have an Internet connection, the Shockwave Media Player installation files are available in the "Shockwave Installers" folder of the CD.
Video images may require the Quicktime movie player to run. There is a link for free download of Quicktime on the start page.
2. The Virtual Microscope Explorer requires a Shockwave compatible web browser to run. We have found that Microsoft Explorer generally works better with the program. Do not try to run the program through AOL. If your computer tries to run The Virtual Microscope Explorer through AOL, minimize AOL, and open Microsoft Explorer or Netscape. Then open The Virtual Microscope Explorer directly from Microsoft Explorer or Netscape.
3. The minimum system requirements are listed on the requirements page.
4. Below are the files that you will see on the Virtual Microscope Explorer CD. The number of files shown by your computer and the appearance of the file icons will vary depending on the type of computer you have and on your operating system. To start the program, click on the "Start Microscope.htm" file. The icons associated with the “Start Microscope.htm” file will vary depending on your default web browser. As noted above, the program seems to work best with Microsoft Explorer. We recommend that you copy the all of the files on the CD into a folder you create on your hard drive, and run the program from the hard drive. ALL of the files on the CD must be in one folder for the program to work.
5. You will see the information below after you click on “Start Microscope.htm”. To start the microscope simulation, click on the link “Click here to start the simulation” as instructed.
6. See the Quick Start Guide below for basic functions of the Virtual Microscope Explorer.
7. Detailed instructions for use of the Virtual Microscope Explorer are in an instructional video included on the CD.
8. Begin using the Virtual Microscope Explorer.
